How to Host Dipsters Games
Since you are now required to host one Non-Tournament Dipsters Group game each year to maintain your active membership status, we have gathered a few game creation files here as aids in creating those games.
These files are meant to be just basic guides for GMs. You are free to create any type of game with any settings, provided that you adhere to the following rules:
- You must identify your game as a Dipsters game: "Welcome to ........, a fast-paced Dipsters Group high ontime ratio game."
- SET LATE COUNT, SET NO LIST, and SET MANUAL START must be part of the game parameters.
- Special Rules #1 through #6 (see sample files) must be part of the game listing and must be enforced if necessary.
Fortunately it is hardly ever necessary to enforce these rules but, should you find yourself in just such a situation, involve the Dipsters Group Moderator in your game early. There is no reason why a member serving as a GM must take on the unpleasant task of disciplining another member.
To create your game, take one of the templates, paste it into a text file, and make whatever changes you desire. Be sure to change the 2 lines that start with '*', removing the '*' at the beginning of each of those two lines. Then paste the edited text file into an email and mail it to one of the Ken Lowe judges.
Then just tell the current Dipsters Group Moderator about your game. He will list it in the forming and ongoing Dipsters Group games and promote it to the membership.
Once your new game has filled, check the players against your game requirements: e.g, Dipsters Members, Diplomacy Direct Members, Vermont Group Members, players with an otr greater than 90%, players with a certain JDPR range, etc.
Once you are satisfied that all players fulfill the requirements of your game, start the game by sending the command, 'SET AUTO START' to your judge.
That is all that you need to do. Now, let's have some fun! :-)
Alan Mennel
P.S. Here is an addendum listing alternate commands for the most common options:
1) Wait Settings:
Determines the ability of players to use the SET WAIT command.
If STRICT WAIT is set, only players who have moves currently
required will be allowed to use SET WAIT;
If NO STRICT WAIT is set (default), any currently active player
can use SET WAIT.
set strict wait
set no strict wait
2) Start Settings: If your game is restricted to a certain group,
you may want to verify your players' requirements before starting
the game by using 'set manual start'.
set manual start
set autostart
3) Press Settings
set no press
set white/grey
set white
4) Partial Press: Copies/does not copy Partial Press to Master
set all press
set normal press
5) Preference Settings
set prfboth
set prflist
set prfrand
6) Dedication etc. Settings:
DIPSTERS GROUP USUAL SETTINGS ARE:
set dedication 0
set resrat 1.0
set ontimerat .80
JUDGE DEFAULT SETTINGS ARE:
set dedication -10000
set resrat 1.0

*Welcome to GAMENAME, a fast-paced Dipsters Group
game.
This is a no press fast gunboat game with
24 hour deadlines occurring every day.
To join this game you must be a member of
The Dipsters Group
http://www.dipsters.org
Do not attempt to join this game if you do not meet
the requirements above.
This game is conducted under standard EP House Rules:
http://www.diplom.org/DipPouch/Email/ep.house.rules.txt
The following special rules also govern this game:
- Do not abandon this game. Abandoning this game will result in you being banned from all future Dipsters Group games.
- This game requires that you maintain a decent ontime ratio. Do not hold up the game by being late. In the interest of maintaining timely play for all players in this game, the GM must eject any player who has been late more than 20% of the time in this game and has already been late 4 times or more.
- If you need an absence during the game, you should do this on your own by submitting a 'set absence' command to the judge in the following format: 'Set Absence Jan 01 00:00 to Jan 06 23:59' Just be sure that you have requested your absence well before you need it because the judge will not accept an absence request that falls within the current season.
- In a press game the GM may eject any player who continues to be verbally abusive after one warning.
- In a no-press or gunboat game, you must keep your anonymity through the end of the game and you must not discuss the game until it has been completed. If this game is part of a tournament, you must keep this rule until the end of the tournament.
- At the end of the game the GM may poll his players about whom in the game they would or would not play again. A player accumulates a "No Play" game if 2/3 or more of the other players in his game vote not to play with him again.
This setting works as follows:
1) If you SET PREFERENCE *, you are asking for a random power. Powers are assigned first to those players who chose a random power [SET PREFERENCE *].
2) Powers are assigned then to those players who submitted a preference list [SET PREFERENCE AEFGIRT].
3) Finally powers are assigned to those players who submitted no choice.
