   Those of you who are playing in or watching 'balance'will know the story:

   Last Saturday, after six years playing online, I finally took the plunge and played my first game of face-to-face Diplomacy. I went to Sydney and entered the Australian Diplomacy Championships. I had lots of fun, lots of luck, quite a wrestle with the current Australian and [cough] World Champion, and ended up finishing second in the tournament.

   Even better, even though I finished second, I won the first prize ... ?!? ... The tounament director, Thorin Munro, ended up winning with the only solo of the tournament, even though he was technically filling up the numbers. So, according to the rules that say the TD can't win the prizes, while he is new and deserved Australian Champion, I win the prize - a free trip to the World Diplomacy Championships in Den Haag, Holland, in August. How come we don't have these sort of prizes for Dipsters games, Alan? ;-)

   So, now the question: are any of you going to the WDC in The Hague, August 19-22?

   If the answer is yes, then here comes the invitation. As many of you who have played with me in Dipsters press games will know, I have often made rash promises to buy my opponents a beer in return for a favour - a good stab; support to Munich ... I have made these promises safe in the knowledge that we are a hemisphere apart. :-)

   Well, August 22 is my birthday, and Dutch beer is the best, so anyone from Dipsters who is going to the WDC who wants to turn up to the pub in Holland and who can make a case that I owe them a beer, will get one. If not, I'll buy them one anyway for reading this far. :-)

   And now the challenge. I have posted this on the dipsters.org forum and on the yahoo forum, with one crucial difference. The challange is to spot the difference. It's in your interest!

   Did somebody say beer?

   Congratulations on your fine F2F triumph. Thorin may have won the tournament, but as you are the selected representative from Oz, that makes you champion of the cause. I bet you planned it that way so that those folks at WDC will underestimate you.

   As for the challenge, my response is in the form of a question:

   Why are pirates called pirates?

   many congratulations Jonathan on your performance in the recent F2F tournament! The prize of the trip to Holland is amazing, but just how long is the flight from down under? It must be just about as far as you can go in one trip.

   As to the question of beer, I would love to take you up on that, but as of right now, I have no plans to be in Holland in August. And I will tell you what, if I buy an airline ticket to come up from Texas just to see you, I won't care if it is your birthday (well, I *will* help you celebrate it), but you are buying *me* the beer! ;)

   Hey Jonathan,

   Congratulations on an excellent result! That's an amazing prize there. Do you get to stay over for the EDC? (held in Paris, France - the weekend after the WDC, free hotel, I understand).

   I'm planning to make the relatvely short trip(s) over to the EDC and the WDC in the summer and hopefully I will be bringing backup with me. We Brits can't let the Aussies or the Yanks outnumber us on our own doorstep after all!

   Assuming I make it, then the guy who placed second in the Australian NDC can buy the guy who placed second in the British NDC a beer! I was pipped to the post by Dan (who finished second in the last WDC) but all I got for my efforts was to give the winner a lift home. Harumph!

   Are you going to be writing up your experiences of the tournament? I for one would be interested in reading it, so if you do, can you point me in the right direction?

   OK, after 5 days I finally get it. "Why are pirates called pirates? They just Arrrr!". There is in R missing in 'tounament' in the dipsters.org post, as compared with the yahoo post.

   But the last laugh is on me, as the real difference is that for people reading here, *I'm* buying the beer, whereas for people reading on Yahoo, *they're* buying the beer. Haaarrr! :-) I guess, John, that as a Scotsman, you just assumed I'd be buying ;-)

   [Low blow! I owe you another one...]

   Alan, I hope you spotted this subtle incentive to drive people to the new forum!

   Ken, the flight's usually about 22-23 hours in the air, 25-26 in total with stopovers to refuel. The Australian record in 52 cans of beer consumed during the flight, currently held by David Boon, former opening batsman of the Australian cricket team. Clearly, he had an aisle seat.

   Dave - we haven't played, I'm sure I don't yet owe you a beer ... but you're on!
