Alan Mennel on "Dipsters Spring Variant Tournament"

Now that it is May, it is time for the annual Dipsters' Group Variant Tournament.

All tournament games are 24 hour no-press games with weekday
(Monday through Thursday) deadlines. The tournament games start
under a staggered schedule with the last game beginning
approximately 12 weeks after the first game starts.

This year we are playing a variant which we call 'Open Build'.

There are two special settings for this tournament variant:

1) Players may build in any owned (home or non-home) center during a build phase.

This is an interesting setting because it allows strong governments in exile even after one's homeland is overrun.

2) Players may disband any unit during a build phase (and thus gain the option to rebuild on a buildable center if desired).

If interested, please join the queue right away:

http://www.dipsters.org/dvt.html

You may access the tournament rules through this page.

Since we are starting this tournament a little late (as usual),
please join right away as we may start as soon as we reach a quorum.

To play in this tournament, you must
- be a member of the Dipsters' Group, or
- be a member of Diplomacy Direct, or
- have an ontime record of 90% or better on the Ken Lowe judges with no willing abandonment.

Best of Luck,

Alan Mennel

Hi Chris:

Thank you for your continued support.

I always, always, always appreciate it!

I appreciate your offer to run the tournament but I think that I should decline for a couple of reasons.

First of all, you are a very, very busy guy. I would not like to have this tournament take time away from your other projects...especially the JDPR project.

Secondly, with the help of your automated tournament seeding program, I would like to "spread the work around" and have someone from the new "generation" of Dipsters "step up" to run this tournament and contribute to the enjoyment level of this group.

I have decided to ask Rian Mitra to run the tournament. Rian is a younger* Dipster who is dedicated to the hobby and who has a great deal of experience as a GM

Thanks again for your support!

All the Best,

Alan Mennel

*Rian is younger than me anyway but I am older than dirt.

P.S. One of the tournaments that the members had chosen but which never made it to reality last year was a variant tournament in the Open Build format. Runners up to Open Build were 1898 (which ran the year before) and Modern.

I will leave it to Rian to decide whether to take up again with Open Build (which had already been chosen by the members) or to run a new poll to select possibly another Variant for the tournament.

By the way, we should continue this conversation on the Members Forum since our YAHOO! site will soon be disabled.

http://www.dipsters.org/forum/

Alan

--- In Dipsters@yahoogroups.com, Chris Babcock <cbabcock@...> wrote:
>
> > I was quite disappointed in myself when my personal problems kept me
> > from hosting the Dipsters Tournaments this past year. One thing that
> > I now realize is that one cannot rely upon one person to get things
> > done...even when that person is oneself. It just does not always
> > work.
>
> This -- and everything that I clipped -- is exactly why my master plan
> for asciiking.com includes a non-profit corporation. I'm not going to
> last forever physically or mentally... none of us in this hobby will.
>
> > With this in mind, I am now asking for a qualified person to come
> > forward now to be the TD (Tournament Director) for our Spring
> > No-Press Variant Tournament.
>
> While waiting for a response on what to do next with the JDPR, I'm in
> the process of coding automated 7x7 tournament seeding that I designed
> awhile back. Where we didn't have a Conventional No-Press Tournament
> this fall, maybe the spring Variant No-Press Tournament should be
> something that's played on the standard board. Fleet Rome won't quite
> work, but maybe shift around?
>
> (I'm volunteering for TD as long I will be able to use my toolkit for
> the job. The only way it will be manageable for me is if I can automate
> it without making further modifications to the software.)
>
> > I have also decided to close down the Dipsters and Diplomacy Direct
> > sites on Yahoo! within a week. After this time, you will be able to
> > use these sites as archives but you will no longer be able to post to
> > their message boards.
>
> This *is* a good move regardless. It's an even better move if a couple
> other people can step up. I'm congenitally over involved (Yes, I do
> mean that it's a genetic disorder.) so let's spread the work around
> please.
>
> Chris

Would anyone want to be the TD for our upcoming tournament?

I do not want people who have already committed to play or who are considering playing the tournament.

I also do not want JKs because you guys are doing far too much already.

If anyone is interested, write me privately at
